For most of us, we can’t envision living without our laptops. It is possibly one of the most revolutionary innovations in our modern world. Thanks to its compactness and portability, you are able to operate it wherever you are – whether you are on the move, on the bed or away from your office desk. The invention of laptops has brought forth plenty of benefits and has completely transformed the way we work, play and live. However, it is also undeniable that laptops come with their own set of disadvantages too. One notable disadvantage is that laptops are more fragile, which also means that they are more susceptible to environmental impacts and bad habits.

Now, while laptop repair services in Singapore are not expensive, no one likes making trips down to the laptop repair shop time and again. Hence, to prolong the lifespan of your precious laptop, you must first understand what’s killing it.

Let’s jump right into some bad habits that have a detrimental impact on your laptop.

5 Bad Habits That Are Killing Your Laptop

1. Using your laptop on surfaces with poor ventilation

It always felt nice to snuggle under the blanket while catching up on our favourite Netflix series on our laptops, isn’t it? However, most of us probably did not realise what we’ve been doing things wrong the whole time. That is – using our laptop on surfaces with poor ventilation such as blankets, pillows and any other cushioning material. Like the human, laptops require room to breathe. But when you place your laptops on these surfaces, the air from the internal fans gets shut off, resulting in the inability to regulate airflow.

If you often hear loud, spinning sound from your laptop, that could be a bad sign that your laptop is overheating. And unfortunately, your laptop’s fan is not the only thing that’s going to be the only component that is affected. Think – processor and battery too. So the next time you intend to place your laptop on your bed, we’d highly recommend to give it a second thought!

Tip: If you love chilling in bed with your laptop, consider investing in a laptop cooling pad or have your laptop cooling system service once every 2 years for non-heavy user or once every year for heavy user.

2. Treating your laptop like a table

One thing for sure, we are all guilty of stacking things like heavy books and all atop our laptops. This might sound like a piece of trivia until your LCD or hinges get hurt someday.

Although your laptops usually come with hard plastic shell (or perhaps even metallic ones), they are extremely sensitive to pressure. Hence, placing heavy objects on your laptops can lead to cracked and deformed screen, or more severe consequences that you don’t want to imagine.

3. Draining your laptop’s battery to 0% all the time

It has always been a debate on whether it is harmful to discharge your laptop fully. The answer is – yes! Not only does fully discharging your laptop put a strain on its battery, but you’d probably also diminish its overall charging capacity in the long run.

4. Neither should you keep your laptop plugged in all the time

Like most people, you’d probably have the habit of keeping your laptop plugged in all the time. Yet, what many do not know is that leaving your laptop at 100% capacity continuously will also shorten its lifespan. Although keeping it plugged in will not cause the battery to be ‘overcharged’, it does cause a strain on it.

Hence, it is recommended to unplug your charger once your laptop hits about 80%.

5. Shutting down your laptop multiple times a day

If you use your laptop multiple times a day, it is recommended not to have it completely shut down after every use. Why? Because this stresses the components within the system.

Unless you are not using your laptop for an extended period of time, consider using the sleep or hibernation setting instead. We highly recommend you to shut down after a long day of work, your laptop need to rest too.
